Monroe County has an extensive fiber-based infrastructure owned by its local telephone companies, Frontier Communications, Palmerton Telephone and Verizon, as well as the cable company, PenTeleData.
Access to fiber in Monroe County is not an issue. However, facilities-based competition among non-cable-based providers is more limited. Few facilities-based alternatives to the local telephone companies exist if the customer does not want a cable-based network. Primary competitive wireline providers are: Level3, PPL Telecom and FirstEnergy.
Monroe County has an abundance of long-haul fiber stretching north-south across the region; however a considerable amount of that fiber is not being used by local customers.
