PMEDC Video Series Promotes Local Companies

The Pocono Mountains Economic Development Corporation’s ability to provide infrastructure support, grants, low cost loan programs, and working capital is on full display in the first installment of a new video series designed to highlight Monroe County, Pennsylvania’s most innovative companies. The series, which premiers this week, was produced as part of PP&L’s Blue Ribbon Grant program.

PPL’s continued support of our marketing initiatives over the years has allowed us to do some really innovative and creative projects,” says PMEDCExecutive Director Chuck Leonard. “We developed a mobile version of our website for use on smart phones and tablets, we added a Report Builder function to our website targeted at site selectors, we added Virtual Tours of selected properties to our online property database and we now have a trade show booth of our own to promote the Poconos as a business destination. These projects would not have been possible without the PPL Blue Ribbon Marketing Program.”

The first video in the series focuses on Vigon International, a worldwide leader in the flavor and fragrance manufacturing industry, located in East Stroudsburg.

“This is a thrilling step in our marketing development on a number of levels” says PMEDC Marketing Director Michelle Bisbing.

“Great companies have come to Monroe County, because our proximity to market and low business costs make this an ideal location,” she continues. “and we’ve been looking for a way to highlight our entrepreneurs and manufacturers. This video series gives us a great opportunity to do that.”

“It also gives us the chance to show aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners that may have hit the wall in their present locations, that PMEDC can support them every step of the way, whether that means facilitating infrastructure development, providing grants to fund job-creating construction, low-interest loans, and even working capital.”

Bisbing says Vigon was chosen for the initial installment because PMEDChas been involved in the company’s evolution every step of the way. Vigon President Steve Somers echoes that thought.

PMEDC has been very supportive of us over the years,” says Somers, “going back to our first significant infrastructure development, which was our distribution facility.”

“We needed to get a water line to the facility and they were there to help us. They got a state grant and worked with the water authority to get that done for us.”
Bisbing adds that the video series also continues PMEDC’s deliberate evolution in the social media space. In addition to streaming the video at PMEDC.com, the video is the first to appear on a PMEDC-curated YouTube channel. She says that the goal for that channel is to add additional long- and short-form video highlighting Monroe County’s businesses and entrepreneurs.

“We want our owners to know that our primary focus is to promote them and help them succeed, because that’s really what it’s all about, having a wide variety of job creating businesses that contribute to a healthy local economy.”

Asked which companies might be highlighted in the next installment, Bisbing was open minded.

“You need a good mix to have a robust economy,” says Bisbing, “and the most important message we can convey is that regardless of their size, PMEDC is here to help our existing companies as well as businesses that are ready to relocate here.”

“Our mission is to help businesses provide jobs and enhance Monroe County’s quality of life. This video series focused on our local innovators is just the latest tool in the toolbox that helps us do that.”

West End Employees Come Home to Mobility Manufacturing Facility

Born from circumstances that could herald a paradigm shift in employee/owner relations as America retools its manufacturing industry, TCIMobility is opened a new facility in March that will bring up to 25 high-paying jobs to Gilbert.

TCI Mobility, previously only a Florida-based distributor of mobility vans for the medical transport, hotel and airport shuttle, and adult daycare industries, will open a manufacturing division located solely in the new Gilbert, PA facility.

The facility currently has eight full time employees and expects that number to ramp up to about 20 by summer’s end with wages that will range as high as $50,000 per year.

“We are thrilled to welcome TCI Mobility to Monroe County,” says Pocono Mountains Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Chuck Leonard.

“This is a great feel good story for Monroe County’s workforce. These local people had lost their jobs in Bethlehem. Now, not only do they have a great paying jobs, but they’re actually working closer to home. You really have to tip your cap to Scott Weinstein and Steve Hoffman at TCI Mobility for the opportunity and respect they’ve given their team.”

Weinstein and Hoffman hadn’t planned on getting into the manufacturing business, but they turned a daunting business obstacle into a huge business opportunity, with the help of their new employees.

“Just five months before this happened, Steve and I talked and decided not to get into manufacturing,” says Weinstein. “We decided that we didn’t have the expertise.”

Then, TCI’s long-time supplier sold their business – and their Bethlehem, PA manufacturing facility – to another company and closed the Bethlehem plant, leaving Hoffman and Weinstein to ponder their options.

“Imagine coming into the office one day and finding out that your primary supplier has decided to close their doors, “says Hoffman. “We had to start gearing up for what was probably going to be a one-supplier solution.”

That’s when fate stepped in. The plant closing in Bethlehem had left a couple of dozen people out of work, many from the West End. Pete Klenke, a Brodheadsville resident who managed the shuttered plant, contacted Weinstein and Hoffman, his former clients, and asked if they had ever considered the manufacturing business.

“It was a stroke of good fortune,” says Weinstein. “Our distribution business had been growing so fast that this was the logical next step. We just needed the right talent. Then suddenly these people, who are really the best at what they do, were available.”

“Once we had the right cogs in place, it changed our whole perspective. It was an easy decision.”

Hoffman and Weinstein say they never considered anything other than a Pennsylvania location for their new venture.

“We have to be here, because difference in the work ethic and employee commitment is just extraordinary,” says Weinstein, adding that the region’s proximity to major interstate highways will be an asset to TCI as it builds its own distribution network.

“Our goal is to be the most customer-centric mobility van supplier in the country,” says Hoffman. “We want to give our customers exactly what they need, especially when it comes to vehicles for people with disabilities, because in those cases what we do has a direct impact on their quality of life.”

“We owe it to them to provide the best.”

Governor Corbett Calls on DCED to Reduce Loan Program Interest Rates

Harrisburg – Continuing to advance his JOBS1st PA initiative, Governor Tom Corbett today announced that he has directed the Department of Community and Economic Development to reduce the interest rates of three business loan programs to encourage small business and manufacturing growth and new job creation.

“Small businesses and manufacturers continue to be the driver of Pennsylvania’s economic engine,” said Corbett. “Access to affordable capital spurs new growth and is critical to ensuring Pennsylvania’s economy is built to advance. By reducing interest rates and the cost of borrowing, we are encouraging new growth through providing critical access to capital and freeing up operating cash to support new job creation.”

Beginning February 1, 2014, the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) will lower interest rates for the Machinery & Equipment Loan Fund, Pollution Prevention Assistance Program, Export Financing Program and Small Business First to 1.75 percent for applications received prior to July 1, 2014. DCED will also waive its fees charged to the borrowers.

At its February 5, 2014 board meeting, the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA) also reduced its interest rates from four percent to 2.25 percent for applications received through July 1, 2014. PIDAalso waived its fees charged to borrowers. The reinstatement of the interest rate reduction initiative follows a successful initiative a year ago.

From December 2012 through June 30, 2013, DCED received over 150 applications, more than double received the entire year prior totaling more than $106 million in loans approved. Leveraging more than $153 million in additional private investment, the approved projects are expected to create 3,028 jobs and retain 17,794 positions.

In 2012, Gov. Corbett launched JOBS1st PA as a comprehensive roadmap to economic recovery that harnessed the state’s resources and talents to prioritize private-sector job creation and retention. Today, Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate stands at a five-year low and jobs have been growing on a consistent basis for nearly four years.

Casey Urges Marine Corps to Bring New Mission to Tobyhanna Army Depot

Banner with Congressional seal on the left. White text on blue background reads Bob Casey United States Senator for Pennsylvania

Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he sent a letter to General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, urging him to move forward with a proposal to bring a new mission to the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Currently, the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters, located in Garden City, NY, is considering relocating to the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Bringing this additional mission to Northeastern Pennsylvania would strengthen Tobyhanna Army Depot and support economic growth in the region. The U.S. Marine Corps is currently Tobyhanna’s fastest growing customer and the Army Depot’s skilled work force has succeeded in making repairs to Marine Corps equipment like the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar.

“Tobyhanna Army Depot’s workforce is highly skilled and has proven to be up to any task that’s put in front of them. Already Tobyhanna’s workforce has proven effective at making repairs to sophisticated U.S. Marine Corps radar,” Senator Casey said. “Bringing this new mission to Northeastern Pennsylvania will strengthen the role that Tobyhanna Army Depot plays in our nation’s defense and contribute to growing the economy of Monroe County and the entire area.”

The full text of Senator Casey’s letter can be seen below:

General James F. Amos
Commandant of the Marine Corps
Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps
3000 Marine Corps, Pentagon
Washington, DC 20350-3000

Dear General Amos:

It is my understanding that the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters is considering relocation to the Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD), located in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this letter is to express my support for the Tobyhanna Army Depot and urge you to strongly consider relocation to Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Throughout history, TYAD has provided support services for our men and women in uniform. I understand that the Marine Corps is the TYAD’s fastest-growing customer and serves as their organic source of repair for its new AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar. Given that TYAD has developed a solid interservice relationship with USMC, this potential move should provide significant benefit to both the Marine Corps and the depot.

TYAD is a first class facility that has played a central role in bolstering our national defense and military readiness for decades. TYAD is the largest, full-service electronic maintenance facility in the Department of Defense and has been a center of electronics excellence for over sixty years. Having visited Tobyhanna over the years, I continue to be impressed with their advancements in additive manufacturing, their modern Department of Defense installation with upgraded utilities and security, and their overall ability to stay on the cutting edge of technology. In addition, TYAD offers available family housing, a modern child care facility, and active Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs.

Located in the heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains, major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, New York, Northern New Jersey, and Harrisburg are within a two hour drive of TYAD. Five major interstate highways converge in the region, providing access to 80 million people within an overnight drive and 80 percent of the U.S. population within two days or less. The region’s infrastructure helps TYAD serve its customers in an effective and efficient manner.

Monroe County offers a low cost of living, particularly as compared to that of New York. Furthermore, the region offers a high quality of life, superior educational and healthcare systems and a workforce that has continually demonstrated a strong work ethic. The region is also home to numerous cultural amenities that help make the Poconos a great place to live and work.

I am confident that relocation to the Tobyhanna Army Depot would support the needs of the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters. I ask that you please include this letter in the official relocation file for Tobyhanna Army Depot and thank you for consideration of my views. If I can provide any additional information, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Casey, Jr.
United States Senator

NEPIRC Industry Outreach & Program Evaluation Coordinator Nancy Markovich says the sessions will be highly interactive and results-focused, as experienced facilitators guide individuals through the identification of customer opportunities and the generation of ideas to capitalize on those opportunities. The multi-day workshop, set for February 3, 4, and 6, gives individuals time to immerse themselves in ideas, away from daily distractions.

Monday, February 3 – This session includes an overview of innovation best practices combined with hands-on exercises that incorporate fresh stimulus to spark ideas. Ideas are defined with absolute clarity: Who is the Customer? What is their Problem?

Tuesday, February 4 – This workshop exposes individuals to new “outside in” thinking that doubles odds of success by turning sales and marketing into a customer pull system. More ideas are generated and refined for greater clarity: What benefit Promise are we making? What’s the Proof that we can deliver on the promise? More importantly, individuals are challenged to develop and select a single idea that is meaningful to potential customers and the organization. At the conclusion of the session each attendee must select an idea for development. (Homework assignment: Complete a Concept Pitch Sheet for peer Review).

Thursday, February 6 – This session includes peer-based feedback, business case development, forecasting and a threat assessment. At the conclusion of this session, individuals refine their ideas and prepare for final submittal. (Homework assignment due the following Monday: Prepare a Final Concept Pitch Sheet for Innovation Engineering professional review).

After submitting Final Concept Pitch Sheet, attendees will receive feedback from NEPIRC’s trained Innovation Engineering professionals about moving the idea forward, developing the idea for greater clarity, or stopping work on the idea.

Recycled Product Manufacturer Bringing New Jobs to Tobyhanna

Pocono Mountains Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Chuck Leonard says that the opening of a new recycled product manufacturing facility in 2014 will create a number of new jobs.

Waste Not Technologies, LLC today broke ground on October 11 for a new 12,000 square foot manufacturing facility in the Pocono Mountains Corporate Center (PMCC) East in Coolbaugh Township, PA.

The company received a $500,000 Local Share Account (LSA) grant drawn from revenues generated by Mount Airy Resort and Casino and distributed by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Waste Not is using a portion of the grant to help cover construction costs of a manufacturing center where recycled plastic, mostly in the form of milk jugs, will be used to manufacture post and rail fence. The remaining grant funds are directed toward the purchase of additional equipment for the company’s expanded operations.

“Patrick Kelley (owner of Waste Not Technologies) was committed to getting this facility off the ground here in Monroe County,” says Leonard, “and this new facility will help him to increase production and add jobs. He and his company truly represent the kind of entrepreneur and small business that the LSA grants are designed to encourage. We’re looking forward to his success and continued growth here at PMCC East.”

Waste Not Technologies is a family owned business that currently operates out of a pilot plant facility in Saylorsburg, PA. The company’s brown plastic rail posts are designed to be durable and hide dirt and mildew, ensuring that the fence remains aesthetically appealing for many years. The fencing is sold through Close The Loop Company located in Kunkletown, PA.

Pocono Mountains, Penn. (October 1, 2013) – Kalahari Resorts & Convention Center team members and executives, along with Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, gathered with 250 supporters to break ground on the new African-themed waterpark and convention center, the Nelson family’s third resort.

Scheduled to open in 2015, Kalahari Resorts Pocono Mountains is a $230 million, 150-acre complex in Monroe County at Pocono Manor. The ground breaking begins phase one of the resort project, which will include: 457 luxury guest rooms and suites, a 100,0000-square-foot indoor waterpark and seasonal outdoor waterpark, a 65,000-square-foot convention center, a 30,000-square-foot family entertainment center and 6,000 square feet of retail space. The resort will also feature three full-service restaurants and will offer something for everyone, including a high-end steak and seafood option, a gourmet buffet, a cozy lounge and snack areas.

“Kalahari is thrilled to bring our authentic African resort experience to the East Coast,” says Todd Nelson, owner and president of Kalahari Resorts. “As the Pocono Mountains property begins construction, we look forward to contributing to the local economy and sharing our beyond expectations approach to hospitality with area vacation goers, conference attendees and local guests throughout the Pocono region.”

The Pocono Mountains resort marks the company’s first foray into the East Coast market and third Kalahari Resorts & Convention Center, joining successful properties in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., and Sandusky, Ohio. Since its conception, Kalahari Resorts has acted as a unique, family-owned and operated business, which is evident in the company’s overall family oriented business plan and its day-to-day operations.

“We are pleased to welcome this new project to the Poconos. Tourism is our state’s second largest industry providing good, stable jobs for many Pennsylvanians and this project will add to that success,” said Governor Corbett at the groundbreaking ceremony.

When Phase I is complete the Pocono Mountains resort will offer convention and meeting goers flexible space ranging from 9,000 square feet to 65,000 square feet alongside extraordinary function areas throughout the indoor and outdoor waterparks and family entertainment center. Other signature amenities include Spa Kalahari and Salon, daily kid’s activity programs, and plenty of indoor and outdoor adventures for the entire family to enjoy. Additional recreation and entertainment options are expected to include black light mini golf, arcade games, horseback riding, archery, fishing, sledding and more.

Phase II will add another 100,000 square feet of indoor waterpark space, 400 more guest rooms and suites and expand the outdoor waterpark to a total of 3-5 acres. The project is expected to create more than 1,500 new jobs upon completion and will help boost the Poconos Mountains $2.1 billion tourism industry.

“The Pocono Mountains welcomes the addition of Kalahari Resorts to its’ already existing tourism landscape of attractions and accommodations,” said Carl Wilgus, president/CEO of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau. “Their proposed resort, waterpark and convention center, combined with their history of demonstrated quality management and customer service excellence, will make them a welcomed addition and asset to the Pocono Mountains tourism product. Furthermore, the family-owned Kalahari Resort joins the long history and tradition of the family-owned and operated businesses in the Pocono Mountains, branding the region as a destination of choice for family vacations.”

Privately owned by the Nelson family, Kalahari Resorts authentic African theme and décor was inspired by the family’s love of the continent’s land and culture. This is brought to life through the resorts art, furniture, handicrafts and artifacts providing guests with a unique “worlds away” experience. The first resort was built in the Wisconsin Dells in 2000 and features an “all-under-one-roof” concept bringing together a wide array of exciting water rides and attractions, fanciful games and indoor entertainment, outdoor activities, and best-in-class meeting and exhibit facilities. In 2005, Nelson took his waterpark resort and convention center concept to Sandusky, Ohio, and the resort quickly became one of the region’s most popular tourism and business travel destinations.
