Washington, DC- Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he sent a letter to General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, urging him to move forward with a proposal to bring a new mission to the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Currently, the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters, located in Garden City, NY, is considering relocating to the Tobyhanna Army Depot. Bringing this additional mission to Northeastern Pennsylvania would strengthen Tobyhanna Army Depot and support economic growth in the region. The U.S. Marine Corps is currently Tobyhanna’s fastest growing customer and the Army Depot’s skilled work force has succeeded in making repairs to Marine Corps equipment like the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar.
“Tobyhanna Army Depot’s workforce is highly skilled and has proven to be up to any task that’s put in front of them. Already Tobyhanna’s workforce has proven effective at making repairs to sophisticated U.S. Marine Corps radar,” Senator Casey said. “Bringing this new mission to Northeastern Pennsylvania will strengthen the role that Tobyhanna Army Depot plays in our nation’s defense and contribute to growing the economy of Monroe County and the entire area.”

Dear General Amos:
It is my understanding that the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters is considering relocation to the Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD), located in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The purpose of this letter is to express my support for the Tobyhanna Army Depot and urge you to strongly consider relocation to Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Throughout history, TYAD has provided support services for our men and women in uniform. I understand that the Marine Corps is the TYAD’s fastest-growing customer and serves as their organic source of repair for its new AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar. Given that TYAD has developed a solid interservice relationship with USMC, this potential move should provide significant benefit to both the Marine Corps and the depot.
TYAD is a first class facility that has played a central role in bolstering our national defense and military readiness for decades. TYAD is the largest, full-service electronic maintenance facility in the Department of Defense and has been a center of electronics excellence for over sixty years. Having visited Tobyhanna over the years, I continue to be impressed with their advancements in additive manufacturing, their modern Department of Defense installation with upgraded utilities and security, and their overall ability to stay on the cutting edge of technology. In addition, TYAD offers available family housing, a modern child care facility, and active Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs.
Located in the heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains, major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, New York, Northern New Jersey, and Harrisburg are within a two hour drive of TYAD. Five major interstate highways converge in the region, providing access to 80 million people within an overnight drive and 80 percent of the U.S. population within two days or less. The region’s infrastructure helps TYAD serve its customers in an effective and efficient manner.
Monroe County offers a low cost of living, particularly as compared to that of New York. Furthermore, the region offers a high quality of life, superior educational and healthcare systems and a workforce that has continually demonstrated a strong work ethic. The region is also home to numerous cultural amenities that help make the Poconos a great place to live and work.
I am confident that relocation to the Tobyhanna Army Depot would support the needs of the First Marine Corps District Recruiting Headquarters.
